Trust & Risk

Is it safe to let AI answer my phones?

    6 minute readReviewed

    Short answer

It is safe when the AI is bounded — it handles a defined set of situations, refuses the rest, and hands to a human on demand. It is unsafe when it is given open licence to quote prices, promise timelines, or improvise around complaints.

    Yourself, or with the pros

    Do it yourself when

Start with after-hours only, where the alternative is voicemail. The downside of a mistake is genuinely small there.

    Bring in a team when

Move to daytime and primary-line answering once the guardrails, escalation, and logging have been designed rather than assumed.

    Safety is a scope decision

The risk is not that a model produces text — it is what you allow that text to commit you to. An AI that captures a name, address, and pest problem and books into an approved slot has a small blast radius. One improvising a price for a termite treatment does not.

    • Safe: qualification, hours, service area, booking into approved availability
    • Bounded: quoting from a fixed price list, never a calculated estimate
    • Human only: complaints, safety issues, contract changes, anything unusual

    Escalation is the safety mechanism

Every risky path should end at a person, and the AI should take that exit early rather than late. Escalate on frustration, on any request it has not been configured for, and immediately whenever the caller asks. A quick handoff is a good outcome, not a failure.

You cannot manage what you do not review

Recordings and transcripts are not optional. For the first month somebody should read them, and after that a sample. Almost every serious AI incident is preceded by weeks of smaller ones that nobody looked at.

    The alternative has risk too

Voicemail is not a safe default — it is a lost job, and often a homeowner who calls a competitor instead. Compare AI answering against what actually happens today, not against a perfect human answering every call.

    What actually breaks

    • An AI allowed to quote prices it cannot actually honour
    • Escalation that routes to a queue nobody watches after 5pm
    • No recording or transcript, so a disputed call cannot be reviewed

Signals to look for in your own operation

    • You can state in one sentence what the AI is not allowed to do
    • Escalated calls reach a named person with a response expectation
    • Someone has read a transcript this week

    Where this leads

If this decision points toward doing something, it usually points at Voice AI. We are an implementation partner, not a DIY platform — we build the systems, hand them over documented, and your team runs them. If the honest answer is that you should wait or do it yourself, that is a fine outcome too.
